Drawing Cars.

If you have ever wished that you could be better at drawing cars, then the first thing you should do is draw whatever inspires you. It’s a moody thing really and you should go with your emotional state. For example, sometimes I’m in the mood for creating futuristic cars — and then sometimes I want classic cars or old beat up cars from the junk yard. Inspiration has a lot to do with how your final product will be.

Now of course, there are several online sites that will show you all you need to do to learn how to draw a car better. Practice… practice… practice makes perfect — and with a pencil or pen in hand, soon you will be drawing like a pro. But remember, the key is take 5 minutes before you begin and envision it on paper first — set your mood and create a story in your mind. See the lines, the details and spin it around in your head like a virtual 3d model.

It really is surprising how much thought and concentration goes into drawing cars when I begin. Drawing a car from a side view is probably best when you first start out — it’s easier because it eliminates most of the perspective drawing. Lots of online sites will give you plenty of tips and new ideas that will get you started on your new hobby, or have you illustrating for a magazine or book soon enough. Seriously, it’s not that hard as long as you take it slow.

Drawing cars can be so much fun. There is a great site called “How to Draw Cars,” which is owned by Tim Rugendyke. The man knows his stuff and you will learn many great techniques and tips that will be very helpful in your practice. I cut my drawing time in half with just a few tips he gave and it has helped me tremendously. Learning how to draw cars can be lots of fun and not as hard as you might think, but it can take hours unless you know the shortcuts, so be sure to check it out.

I actually prefer drawing Sports cars or classic cars, as I find they are often more fun to draw and can be turned into cartoon cars with practice. And creating them as vector graphics gives them a cool sheen, polished look. You can make money by selling them to other web sites too. You may also discover that you have a better knack for drawing within different mediums, like to draw with regular pencils, crayons or colored pencils. I am horrible with crayons, water colors, etc. — but give me a colored pencil or Adobe Photoshop I’ll tear it up! ;)

Google around and you will find step by step lessons on many web site locations to make it easier. Plus you can copy the image lessons to your computer and get a close look at each step as you go. If you choose freehand, you can draw circles by using a coin as a guide or use other objects that will help you get the idea. If you use pencils for this it makes it easy to erase your mistakes without having to start over. Drafting pens should not be used unless you truly know what you’re doing. Learning to draw cars is so much fun and can be personalized by you in any way you like. Check out all the “how to” videos on you tube and get started today — although I must warn you, they are mostly in fast motion (time lapse) so you can’t really see what they do — but they’re cool to watch anyway! :)

Another great resource is to take a tip from eHow writer Lars-Erik Robinson and learn how to draw cars the easy way. He likes to draw cartoon cars and will make you laugh as you learn all the techniques. The first instruction is finding the main shape like a rectangle and putting that thought into perspective. Once you get the main shape you can add the tires and all of a sudden you are drawing cars. Decide how much detail you want in your car. Do you want a person driving? Do you want o be on a racetrack or riding on the highway with trees in the background? You can learn so much from watching his videos.
